I realize I’m about 2 weeks late on this post, but I thought I would post it anyways. I am never ready to start fresh the first week of January. I’m often still in holiday mode for the first week, still spending time catching up with family and friends. By the second week, I’m ready to focus on the year ahead and what it might hold!
With this in mind, I thought it might be fun to think about my phoneography goals and what steps I plan to take to improve my skill set and improve my photography over the next year.
1. Shoot More
Sometimes I find myself thinking, “gee that would make an awesome photo” without actually stopping to take the photo. This year, I hope to be less lazy, and to pull my camera out more often. It may mean pulling over to catch some amazing light, or crossing the road at the next interval. Or bundling up and getting outside in the cold weather. In 2015, I plan to be less lazy and to simply take more photos.
2. Develop a More Consistent Style
When I follow other photographers on Instagram, I find I am really drawn to those who have a consistent style and a sense of continuity within their work. Looking at my own work, I find that my editing varies dramatically and my images don’t necessarily gel. I’m hoping to develop more continuity within my photography by streamlining my post-processing and editing. Developing a more consistent style will not happen overnight, I believe it will take a lot of trial and error and experience.
3. Take a Class
There is so much amazing information out there that is available through blogs, books and forums on photography. I’m a bit of an introvert and do most of my learning in a solitary fashion. I’m shy and I have a hard time putting myself and my work out there. This year I want to put myself out there and maybe make a few internet friends and take an online photography class. Even though it can be nerve-racking, constructive feedback from a group of peers is a great way to grow and improve. I have my eye on some great classes, especially this course from Clickin Moms called The Art of Mobile Photography.
4. Spend Some Time with my DSLR
I love my phone camera, but this year, I hope to spend a little time with my DSLR. Shooting in manual helps me better understand light and the basic principles of photography. It helps me understand how to achieve more successful shots both with and without my fancy camera.
5. Finish a 365 Not Related To My Kid
My little guy is nine months old today and over the past year, nearly all my photos have been related to pregnancy or life with a baby. This year, I plan to finish a 365 project that is not focused on my baby and motherhood. I want to challenge my creativity and push myself to be more creative.
This is a pretty long and ambitious list! I look forward to pushing myself, trying new things and ultimately improving my phoneography. Over the next year, I look forward to sharing my progress and experience right here on I Heart Phoneography.
Do you have any photography related New Year’s resolutions? If so, I’d love to hear them!
